From Green Activist to Ambassador
In 1990 Kiev was rocked by daily demonstrations calling for Ukrainian independence. Yuri was a Green Party leader who supported Ukrainian sovereignty—a controversial position in those days. Today he's the Ukrainian ambassador to Canada. While still taking a strong stand on environmental issues, he also publicly supports authoritarian Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, who has been linked to murders of opposition journalists and corruption scandals. Is Yuri just carrying out his duties as ambassador, or has power unalterably changed him?
